Generally, turning on the turn signal is only necessary for changing lanes or making turns. However, on highways, it is common to see driving in the leftmost lane without turning or changing lanes, but with the left turn signal on. What is the point? Does it belong to indiscriminate use of lighting? In fact, this is not using the lights indiscriminately. It must be turning on the left turn signal only when overtaking. The purpose is to remind the front and rear vehicles that I am about to overtake, and the overtaken vehicle should not move in the wrong direction. The left turn signal is a overtaking reminder. If there is a car driving slowly in front, it also reminds the car in front to increase its speed. I am preparing to overtake. In short, there is still a left turn signal on the far left lane, which is just a overtaking reminder, not a lane change or reckless lighting. This type of light can only be used on highways and cannot be used on regular roads, as driving a left turn light on regular roads will make the following car think you are going to turn left, and it will not serve as a overtaking warning. You cannot turn left on the highway, and you cannot change lanes to the left on the leftmost lane, so you can use the left turn signal to remind overtaking.

Assuming that two cars were originally driving in the same lane, the normal overtaking action is to turn on the left turn signal to change lanes to the left, overtake the preceding car, turn on the right turn signal to change lanes to the right, and return to the original lane.

This is truly overtaking. This overtaking process is when the left turn signal is still on in the left lane because it changed lanes to the left. So now even if you are already in the leftmost lane, when overtaking a car in the next lane, you will still turn left and give a warning to the car in front.

Why should the preceding car know when overtaking? If you quietly overtake and the preceding vehicle happens to not see you, and if the preceding vehicle also needs to change lanes to overtake or avoid obstacles ahead and change lanes to the left, you have already approached the preceding vehicle and entered the blind spot, which is very dangerous and prone to accidents. If you can let the front car know that you are overtaking, then the front car will not overtake the car in front of you at this time, nor will it change direction or lane. Both cars will be safer.

When two cars run parallel on the highway, there is a great danger because the distance is very close. If a car moves slightly in the direction, there is a possibility of scratching. Sometimes, if you don't take the initiative to turn the direction, on a mountain road with a lot of crosswinds, if there is a crosswind coming, the car will deviate uncontrollably towards the other lane, making it more dangerous if  there is a car next to it. So the shorter the overtaking time, the better. Overtaking allows the preceding vehicle to know, and the preceding vehicle can also be more vigilant. Some people also flash their high beams as a reminder, but they are not very friendly to the front car. Flashing once at night can also affect the visibility of the front car, and during the day, it may not be visible to the rear car. The flashing of the turn signals is more obvious and easy to see, so using turn signal reminders is a good choice. But don't forget to turn off the turn signal after turning it on. After overtaking, turn it off immediately. You can't keep the left turn signal on all the time, otherwise it will become a violation of regulations when using the lights.
