The ECO mode is a fuel-efficient mode, also known as the economic mode. Many people are concerned about the fuel consumption of their vehicles, so they can turn on the ECO mode to save fuel. Sports mode has strong power, and drivers who pursue power can turn on sports mode. So, why does the same car have different fuel consumption and power in different modes? Today we will talk about the principle of fuel efficiency in ECO mode, the reason for the good power in sport mode, and whether these two modes can be used continuously

       ECO mode (1)

The principle of fuel economy is very simple, which is to control the power output of the engine and keep it at a low speed as much as possible. For example, once you step on the accelerator, the engine responds quickly and immediately reaches 3000 rpm. After turning on the ECO mode, the throttle becomes less sensitive. Similarly, stepping on the throttle will slowly increase the engine speed, and the power output will be continuous and gentle. Limiting the power of the engine while also allowing the gearbox to cooperate, resulting in active upshifts and slow downshifts. On the premise that the engine can run normally, try to upshift as early as possible. At the same speed, the higher the gear, the lower the engine speed, and a lower speed will naturally save fuel. And downshifting can also be slow, including downshifting during rapid acceleration. A deep step on the accelerator should have downshifted two gears, but only one and the downshifting is still very slow. In ECO mode, the engine computer controls any movement of the vehicle solely for the purpose of fuel efficiency, without considering anything else or whether your power is sufficient, as long as fuel efficiency is sufficient.

       ECO mode (2)

ECO mode does indeed save fuel, but it comes at the cost of reducing power, and it is impossible to achieve a situation where the power remains unchanged while still saving fuel. Vehicles are the same, either they have weak power but are fuel-efficient, or they have stronger power but consume more fuel. The corresponding ECO mode is the sport mode, which is exactly the opposite. The sport mode only considers power and does not consider fuel consumption. In sport mode, the throttle also becomes more sensitive, and the engine is more willing to increase the RPM. Secondly, the gearbox will delay the shifting timing, keeping the engine constantly at high speeds and maintaining a higher torque output, only for the ultimate better power output.

       ECO mode (3)

Why do many people not use ECO mode for fuel efficiency? There are two reasons. Firstly, the power is too weak, and many people are in a hurry to drive, unable to bear the slow response of the car. Some cars may not have good power at first, but when driving in ECO mode, the power feels even weaker. The second is that it will increase carbon deposition relatively quickly. The engine will generate carbon deposits in any mode, but in ECO mode, due to the low engine speed, more carbon deposits will be retained and cannot be discharged, resulting in a faster growth of carbon deposits. In other modes, even if carbon deposits are generated, due to the high engine speed, many of them will be washed out by larger airflow, leaving very little, and the growth of carbon deposits will be slow.

       ECO mode (4)

Why can't sports mode be used frequently? The main reason is fuel consumption. If you don't care about fuel consumption, you can still use it frequently, but normal driving generally does not require such strong power. In addition, it is powered by delaying gear shifting and increasing engine speed. Compared to other modes, driving the same distance results in more engine operation and more wear and tear. If the sport mode is continuously used, the oil will decay quickly and needs to be replaced on time, which will also affect the engine's lifespan.
