A car owner called to inquire and just bought a car. After starting on a hill, they smelled a strong burnt smell and asked if the car could still be driven? Is there a problem with the quality of the car? Many novice drivers smell a burnt smell after starting on a relatively large slope, some have a stronger smell, while others have a milder smell. In fact, this smell is the burnt smell on the surface of the clutch plate, caused by personal operation, not a quality issue of the car itself.

What is the wrong operation that causes the clutch plate to burn? It is caused by stepping too much on the accelerator during semi clutch transmission. The operation for starting on a slope is as follows: press the brake and pull the handbrake, first release the clutch, and when the clutch first starts to engage, stop and stabilize. At this time, it is in a semi linked state. The next step is to release the brake and refuel. At this point, if the accelerator is applied too much and the clutch is not released in time, it will produce a burnt smell.Due to the current semi linked state, there is relative motion between the flywheel and the clutch plate. When the flywheel rotates at a high speed, it will generate intense friction with the clutch plate, which will generate a large amount of heat. Eventually, the high temperature will cause the surface of the clutch plate to burn and produce a burnt smell. The smell emanates from the gearbox and enters the driver's cabin through the air conditioning intake duct. The driver can smell it, but if the window is open, the smell will be stronger and easier to smell.

This situation mostly occurs during the process of starting on a slope, because on the slope, in order to prevent slipping, the accelerator can only be increased. Some beginners may even press the accelerator deeply when starting on flat ground, smelling a burnt smell. In short, no matter where you start, it's best not to step too deeply on the accelerator. You can step up to 2000 revolutions without any problems. If you step up to 3000 revolutions, you will inevitably smell a burnt smell. Even when starting on a slope, the speed of 2000 rpm is not low, and it is completely possible to successfully start. In fact, most drivers do not intentionally step on the accelerator to over 3000 rpm, it is because the throttle control is poor, and with just one strong step, they can reach 3000 rpm. There is also a way to avoid this. When the throttle speed starts to increase, quickly release the clutch completely, do not loosen it slowly anymore, and there will be no burning smell.

After the burnt smell appears, the car can still continue to drive because only a small area on the surface of the clutch plate is burnt. As the vehicle continues to be used, the burnt area on the surface can be worn off and returned to normal. Due to the short starting time, which is only a few seconds, there will not be too much wear on the clutch plates, and the clutch plates will not be worn out in one go, so you can use the car with confidence. But it cannot occur frequently. If it occurs too many times, the lifespan of the clutch plate will be greatly reduced. Others can use it for tens of thousands of kilometers normally, while beginners may only be able to use it for 30-50000 kilometers. So when driving a manual transmission, the starting technique is quite important and the most basic, and more practice is needed.
