Economic operation of China's automobile industry in April 2022

In April, 2022, affected by the multi-point spread of domestic epidemic and other factors, China's automobile production and sales decreased by 46.1% and 47.6% respectively year-on-year, but the production and sales of new energy vehicles continued to grow year-on-year, with a market penetration rate of 25.3%.

1. In April, the automobile sales decreased by 47.6% year-on-year

In April, China's automobile production and sales reached 1,205,000 and 1,181,000 respectively, with a month-on-month decrease of 46.2% and 47.1% and a year-on-year decrease of 46.1% and 47.6% respectively.

From January to April, China's automobile production and sales reached 7.69 million and 7.691 million respectively, with a year-on-year decrease of 10.5% and 12.1% respectively.

1) In April, the sales volume of passenger vehicles decreased by 43.4% year-on-year

In April, 996,000 and 965,000 passenger vehicles were produced and sold, decreased 41.9% and 43.4% year-on-year respectively. In terms of models, 458,000 and 461,000 cars were produced and sold respectively, decreased 38.6% and 39.1% year-on-year respectively; the production and sales of SUVs reached 473,000 and 447,000 respectively, with a year-on-year decrease of 43.9% and 45.6% respectively; the production and sales of MPVs reached 47,000 and 39,000 respectively, a year-on-year decrease of 42.1% and 54.6% respectively; the production and sales of cross type passenger vehicles were 18,000, decreased 59.6% and 55.7% respectively year-on-year.

From January to April, the production and sales of passenger vehicles reached 6.494 million and 6.51 million respectively, with a year-on-year decrease of 2.6% and 4.2% respectively. In terms of models, the production and sales of cars were 3.012 million and 3.045 million respectively, decreased 1.1% and 3.0% year-on-year; the production and sales of SUVs reached 3.312 million and 3.114 million respectively, with a year-on-year decrease of 2.3% and 3.8% respectively; the production and sales of MPVs reached 249,000 and 243,000 respectively, with a year-on-year decrease of 22.3% and 20.8% respectively; the production and sales of cross type passenger vehicles were 112,000 and 108,000 respectively, with a year-on-year increase of 0.9% and 0.4% respectively.

2) In April, the sales volume of commercial vehicles decreased by 60.7% year-on-year

In April, the production and sales of commercial vehicles reached 210,000 and 216,000 respectively, with a year-on-year decrease of 59.8% and 60.7% respectively. In terms of models, 185,000 and 191,000 trucks were produced and sold respectively, decreased 61.0% and 62.0% year-on-year; 25,000 passenger cars were produced and sold, with a year-on-year decrease of 48.6% and 46.6% respectively.

From January to April, the production and sales of commercial vehicles reached 1.195 million and 1.181 million respectively, a year-on-year decrease of 37.9% and 39.8% respectively. In terms of models, the production and sales of trucks were 1,081,000 and 1,064,000 respectively, with a year-on-year decrease of 38.8% and 41.0% respectively; the production and sales of passenger cars were 115,000 and 116,000 respectively, with a year-on-year decrease of 27.7% and 27.0% respectively.

2. In April, the sales volume of new energy vehicles increased by 44.6% year-on-year

In April, 312,000 and 299,000 new energy vehicles were produced and sold respectively, with a year-on-year increase of 43.9% and 44.6% respectively, and the market penetration rate was 25.3%. In terms of models, the production and sales of pure electric vehicles reached 242,000 and 231,000 respectively, with a year-on-year increase of 33.0% and 34.6% respectively; the production and sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles were 69,000 and 68,000 respectively, with a year-on-year increase of 1.0 times and 94.0% respectively; 178 and 94 fuel cell vehicles were produced and sold respectively, with a year-on-year increase of 3.9 times and 1.5 times respectively.

From January to April, the production and sales of new energy vehicles were 1.605 million and 1.556 million respectively, an increase of 1.1 times year-on-year, and the market penetration rate was 20.2%. In terms of models, the production and sales of pure electric vehicles were 1.278 million and 1.239 million respectively, an increase of 1.0 times year-on-year; the production and sales of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles were 326,000 and 316,000 respectively, with a year-on-year increase of 1.9 times and 1.7 times respectively; the production and sales of fuel cell vehicles were 1034 and 832 respectively, with a year-on-year increase of 6.4 times and 3.4 times respectively.

3. In April, China's automobile exports fell by 6.6% year-on-year

In April, China exported 141,000 complete vehicles, a year-on-year decrease of 6.6%. In terms of models, the export of passenger vehicles was 99,000, with a year-on-year decrease of 15.2%; the export of commercial vehicles was 42,000, increased 23.2% year-on-year. The export of new energy vehicles was 11,000, a year-on-year decrease of 53.7%.

From January to April, China exported 723,000 complete vehicles, increased 39.4% year-on-year. In terms of models, the export of passenger cars was 551,000, increased 39.1% year-on-year; the export of commercial vehicles was 173,000, increased 40.5% year-on-year. The export of new energy vehicles was 131,000, with a year-on-year increase of 1.4 times.
