The Indiana and Ohio Departments of Transportation have launched a joint project on Interstate 70. Two semi trucks equipped with automated platooning systems began operating on April 14. The deployment runs between Indianapolis, Indiana, and Columbus, Ohio.
The trucks operate under EASE Logistics, a company focused on advanced freight technologies. This marks a key milestone in connected truck deployment in live traffic environments.
The lead truck controls speed and steering. The second truck automatically accelerates, brakes, and follows at a safe distance. Both trucks include trained CDL drivers ready to take control when needed.
Each vehicle displays a purple light while platooning. If a car enters the safety gap, the system adjusts speed to maintain safe spacing.
Peter Coratola Jr., CEO of EASE Logistics, emphasized safety-first innovation.
“We implemented a Crawl/Walk/Run strategy. Our drivers completed 260 hours of training before deployment,” he said.
He noted this initiative strengthens the company’s position as a leader in freight automation.
Kratos Defense developed the platooning system. VP of Business Development, Maynard Factor, highlighted its impact:
“This project proves automated systems can enhance safety and support resilient supply chains,” he said.
“Operating in real-world Midwest weather is vital for commercial readiness.”
INDOT Commissioner Lyndsay Quist stated that automation is a key part of the department’s safety strategy. Ohio Highway Patrol’s Captain Chris Kinn added:
“Unlike human drivers, automated systems don’t drive impaired or distracted,” he said.
“We aim to eliminate human error through smart technology.”
The $8.8 million project received funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The goal is to test performance in diverse weather and traffic conditions.
INDOT and ODOT plan to expand deployments in both states later this year.
