Application
The function of king pin is to engage the semi-trailer to the fifth wheel. The king pin is the most critical component used in the load tranfer from semi-trailer.
The coupling consists of a kingpin, a 2-or-3+1⁄2-inch-diameter (50.8 or 88.9 mm) vertical steel pin protruding from the bottom of the front of the semi-trailer, and a horseshoe-shaped coupling device called a fifth wheel on the rear of the towing vehicle. As the connected truck turns, the downward-facing surface of the semi-trailer (with the kingpin at the center) rotates against the upward-facing surface of the fixed fifth wheel, which does not rotate.

Maintenance | Once the retention plate is installed the kingpin can be easily replaced in minutes by just removing the mounting bolts. Bolts must be tightened and properly torqued. For safety reasons the bolts should only be tightened and torqued once. If removed they should be replaced. |
Grease | High efficient special grease is used to ensure good lubrication effect in various working environments and prolong the service life. |

Selection | The D-value and the thickness of the welding plate are two considerations in making a king pin selection for a semi-trailer design. The actual D-value of the selected king pin must be larger than the calculated D-value. Then determine the thickness of the skid plate. |
Installation | Welding on a channel support for the 2 inch welding king pin, must be more than 110mm between welds. |
Operation | Operation of the semi-trailer will cause normal wear on the king pin, due to abrasion. The following are the limits of wear allowables: 2" king pin: A≧49mm, B≧71mm 3.5" king pin C≧86mm, D≧112mm |
