Only a small number of models have a flat rear floor, while most common models have a protrusion in the middle of the rear floor. Some protrusions are very short and almost do not affect the ride, while others are very high and almost impossible to sit in the middle, with no place to put feet. The reason is actually very simple. If the car's interior protrudes upwards, there is a groove in the chassis that can be used to place certain components, mainly the transmission shaft and exhaust pipe. Both rear wheel drive and four-wheel drive models have high protrusions, making it impossible to sit in the middle. This is because the engine and gearbox are in front, and in order to transmit power to the rear wheels, there must be a transmission shaft, which is thicker and more expensive. The chassis protrudes upwards, and the transmission shaft can be hidden in the groove below, making it less prone to injury. Some front wheel drive models also have very high protrusions, because their high-end models have rear wheel drive or four-wheel drive, using the same body, so there are also high protrusions.

Ordinary front wheel drive cars also have protrusions, but they are not particularly high. Below this protrusion is the exhaust pipe. There are two mufflers on the exhaust pipe, one in the middle section and one at the end section. The other parts of the exhaust pipe are very thin, but the two mufflers are very thick, and the upward protrusion is mainly for placing mufflers. The last muffler is located at the rear end, and we can see it by looking down. Some cars also have drainage holes in the last muffler where water drips from the exhaust pipes. It is installed on the left or right side of the vehicle because the middle position is a sunken area in the trunk for storing the spare tire, and the exhaust pipes can only be on the left and right sides. The key is the mid section muffler, which is located just below the rear of the car and can only be slightly raised for storage. If there is no upward protrusion, the muffler can only be suspended under the chassis, reducing the minimum ground clearance of the chassis and making it easier to support the bottom, dragging and damaging the exhaust pipes. Those cars with flat rear seats either have a slight change in the position of the muffler or are simply suspended below, making it easier to drag onto the exhaust pipe on difficult roads compared to protruding cars.

The protrusion in the back row is not just the place where the feet are placed, but is upward from front to back. The front is the gear lever, and the back is the armrest box, which looks less obvious. In fact, after being raised, the chassis can be made smoother. In addition to being more aesthetically pleasing, a flat chassis can also help reduce the drag coefficient. If the chassis is not raised, it will look uneven, and if the exhaust pipe is suspended underneath, it will not be very aesthetically pleasing. So as long as the rear row of the car is not very high, it is acceptable, as it does not affect the placement of the feet or the layout of the exhaust pipe.
