After turning on the air conditioning, the car's vibration increases and they feel a significant decrease in power, making acceleration very difficult. But the car doesn't have a fault light on, and it's normal to keep the air conditioning on without it. What's going on? Is it a normal phenomenon or is there a malfunction in the car?

There are two situations, some are normal phenomena and some have certain problems. Generally speaking, when a car has a small displacement and the air conditioning is turned on, the impact on the engine is greater, causing more noticeable shaking. Generally, cars with a displacement of 1.5 or less are more noticeable. The maximum power of a 1.5-liter engine is approximately 80 kW, while the power of the air conditioning compressor is around 2 kW. At idle, the engine's power is only a few thousand watts, and the proportion of power consumed by the air conditioning compressor is relatively large. Suddenly applying such a large load to the engine will cause the engine to rotate with difficulty, resulting in shaking and weak acceleration. When the car is driven and the engine speed increases, the power of the engine also increases, the proportion of power consumed by the compressor decreases, and the shaking will be greatly reduced. But compared to not turning on the air conditioning, the acceleration of the car is still relatively difficult because the power of the compressor is too high. It is best to delay the shifting time for a manual transmission car to maintain good power.

If the engine displacement is relatively large, the impact of the compressor on it will be smaller, and there will be no significant shaking. After driving, the impact will be even smaller, and the driver may not feel it. Due to the high displacement and power consumption, the proportion of engine power consumed by the compressor is very small, and the overall impact is very small. However, in addition to being related to the power of the engine, it also depends on the type of compressor. In the later stage, when the temperature inside the car reaches the preset value, the variable displacement compressor will not work at full load. The displacement of the compressor will decrease, which means the power will decrease, and the impact on the engine will be reduced. Therefore, the variable displacement compressor will also be more fuel-efficient.

Another situation is that there is a problem with the car, as its power is not sufficient and there may be noticeable shaking after turning on the air conditioning. Without turning on the air conditioning, the engine load is low and can maintain stable operation. However, if the air conditioning load increases and cannot maintain stable operation, it will immediately exhibit shaking. The common issue is that the throttle valve is dirty, there is too much carbon buildup in the cylinder, and the spark plug needs to be replaced. If the carbon deposition is severe, the spark plug ignition energy is insufficient, and there will be shaking even when the air conditioning is not turned on. If it is not too serious, it will only occur when the air conditioning is turned on. How do I know if there is a problem with the car? It depends on the severity of the shaking, or compared to the previous new car, if the shaking is much more severe than the new car, it is possible that the throttle valve is dirty or the spark plug needs to be replaced. Go to the repair shop to check and confirm. Timely repair in case of problems can improve comfort and achieve fuel efficiency.
