China's new energy vehicles have entered a comprehensive market expansion period

At the 2022 World Power Battery Conference with the theme of " INTELLIGENCE-DRIVEN GREEN POWER • SHARED LOW-CARBON FUTURE" held from July 21 to 23, Mr. Wan Gang, chairman of China Association for science and technology, expressed his views in speech: at present, China's new energy vehicles have entered a comprehensive market expansion period, and the power battery industry is at an important juncture of large-scale development and application, with opportunities and challenges.

In the speech, Mr. Wan Gang expressed five views:

1. Adhere to innovation-driven.

Lithium iron phosphate and ternary battery technology are still the mainstream in the market and are being continuously optimized and improved. The pace of research and development and industrialization of many new technologies such as new system batteries and all-solid-state batteries is also accelerating. Therefore, it is necessary to increase investment, continue to innovate in manufacturing technology and system integration, improve large-scale manufacturing and high-quality delivery capabilities, and also strengthen basic research and cutting-edge technology layout, so as to achieve one generation of research and development and one generation of reserves.

2. Constantly strengthen the supply chain and supplement the industrial chain.

After more than ten years of development, China's power battery industry chain has been increasingly improved and developed. However, in the face of the rapid development of the market, the supply chain is still under great pressure. Since last year, the prices of various raw materials such as lithium carbonate have risen sharply, which has seriously affected the industrial development. Facing the coming TWH( Tera Watt Hours) era, we should strengthen the development of upstream mineral resources, strengthen the coordination between the upper and lower levels of the industrial chain, and pay attention to the recycling of discarded batteries while ensuring the market demand, so as to realize the recycling of key materials and make the industrial chain complete and stronger.

3. Ensure safe development.

It is necessary to continuously improve the technical standard of power battery, improve the thermal management level of vehicle power battery system, and realize the improvement of safety performance in the incremental market. For vehicles in use, it is necessary to maintain them regularly, improve the annual inspection system, and eliminate potential risks through scientific assessment of battery health. It is necessary to strengthen the application of remote monitoring and big data, give timely warning to vehicles in use, and ensure the driving safety of new energy vehicles.

4. Promote and expand the application.

The number of new energy vehicles in China has exceeded 10 million and continues to grow. It is necessary to give full play to the energy carrying and energy storage characteristics of vehicle power batteries, and "cut the peak and fill the valley" for the urban power grid through the two-way interaction between vehicle and grid, so as to improve the efficiency of peak regulation, safety and emergency response capacity of the power grid. Secondly, on the basis of scientific evaluation, a cascade utilization system of retired vehicle power batteries as energy storage batteries is established to improve the efficiency of resource utilization while ensuring safety.

5. Adhere to openness and cooperation.

We will build a new development pattern with the domestic cycle as the main body and the international and domestic two cycles promoting each other. We will strengthen international cooperation in the fields of resource exploitation and refining, battery technology research and development innovation, lithium, nickel and other raw materials trading market management, establish a globally unified carbon footprint accounting method for battery products and an internationally recognized carbon footprint certification system, and promote the interconnection of carbon emission information, Let the application results of vehicle electrification benefit more countries and people.
